Supporting Independent Research

The Scholastic Readers that I purchased for Ken and DJ to go along with their study of the human body study are turning out to be a very good fit for them.

I placed all of the books on the science shelf and showed them how there were questions in the book that would help them understand what they were reading.

DJ used the book to draw a diagram of the brain.

He also decided to record the answers to the questions in his science journal.
Simple. Two of my guidelines for considering an activity a successful one is when it fosters independence, and secondly it stills allows the child the opportunity to make the work their own .

On a side note since this wasn't a focused language arts lesson writing a complete sentence isn't required. I am sure when DJ goes back to refer to this information in his science journal he will discover the importance of writing complete sentences.
